Pilgrims keen on visiting historical mosques in Madinah
Quba Mosque
Quba Mosque in Hajj season - 17 October 2014 Madinah, Dhu-AlHijjah 22, 1435, Oct 16, 2014, SPA
With the start of the countdown to their departure to their countries after performing their Hajj rites, pilgrims and visitors of Madinah are keen on touring and performing prayers in its historical mosques in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and his companions prayed therein, or they witnessed the descent of Gabriel, or being unique heritage, historical and architectural landmarks, from which the fragrance of prophecy can be smelled while bringing to their minds the fragrant memories and wonderful pictures of the Prophet's biography on this blessed land.
At the forefront of these mosques that abound in the city are the Prophet's Mosque, the mosque of Quba, which was the first mosque founded on piety and the largest mosques in Madinah after the Prophet's Mosque.
Quba mosque is located in the south-west of Madinah. It was a box-shaped with a side length of 40 meters and has a dome which is said to be the place at which the female camel of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, knelt.
Moreover, the Quba mosque has ancient monuments in the form of a stone engraved with old Kofi calligraphy showing the history of building the mosque in 435 AH which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself, and his companions participated in its construction.
The mosque is located far from the Prophet's mosque about a half an hour by walk, and the Prophet himself, peace be upon him and his companions participated in constructing it which was renewed by the third Caliph Othman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, and increased its area, and also renewed by Caliph Omar bin Abdulaziz when he was the Prince of Madinah, and established its minaret in the period from 87/93 AH.
In 435 AH, Quba mosque was developed by a niche (Mihrab), and in 555 AH renewed by Kamal Al-Din Al-Isfahani, then its building was renewed several times in years 671 - 733 - 840 - 881 AH at the era of the Ottoman Empire's rule, the last one was in the reign of Sultan Mahmud II and his son, Sultan Abdulmajeed in 1245 AH
And in the prosperous Saudi era, Quba mosque was expanded to accommodate (20,000) worshipers, and the concerned authorities expropriated lands and property surrounding it and commissioned a skilled engineering offices specialized in Islamic architecture for the design of the mosque along the lines of the old one.
The mosque is rectangular in shape and it was taken into account in its design to have an internal courtyard in the middle of the mosque to which all the entrances open, and its northern part is allocated for female worshipers with separate entrances far from the entrances of men.
Quba Mosque consists of two floors, 4 minarets, 56 domes and a residence for Imams and Muezzins as well as a library.
The mosque's area is 13,500 square meters and the area of its buildings is 5860 square meters.
Among Madinah's famous and historical mosques are Al-Joma, Al-Qibltayn, Al-Ghamamah, Al-Ijabah and the seven mosques.

__________________ The Convertible Roof of Quba Mosque
Toldo for the Quba Mosque in Madinah, K.S.A., 1987
Following tradition the Qubah Mosque indicates the place of the most likely oldest mosque in Islamic history. Prophet Muhammad worked there himself. Accordingly, the place has always been revered.
Chronicles tell us of a first larger reconstruction at the beginning of the 8th century. Today’s mosque was built 25 years ago to the plans of Egyptian architect Abdel Wahed El Wakil, who is known for his strictly traditional designs. The previous building from the 19 th century that could no longer accommodate the increasing crowds of pilgrims, was completely removed, to make room for a mosque complex five times its size.
To complete the construction program SL Rasch was commissioned to build shading for the 1000 sqm large inner courtyard. The engineers decided upon the construction of two toldos, the sheets of which could be moved on wires from the long sides of the courtyard to the middle in less than one minute. During summer the consistent use of the shading system has an energy dynamic which reduces the temperature in the courtyard and adjacent buildings significantly below the ambient temperature. Thereby a visit of the mosque becomes an additional blessing.
Description
Two lattice girders are placed between the rows of cupolas; they provide anchorage and contain the mechanical equipment for the facility. The translucent membrane sheets, also permeable to air, consist of two layers, an upper and a lower netting, which are connected by parallel aluminum tubes. The aluminum tubes form the ridges of the outstretched shading and rest on cable rollers. When the shading is extended, the cable rollers move on the carrying cables and clip to the looped driving cables, which are operated by electric motors. The closed toldos are parked at the base of the girders, protected from sand and dust.
This project demonstrates that, in addition to applications where convertible roofs can be worked into the design of a building from its inception, they can also be integrated into an existing building. Here the additional loads had to be transmitted to a new ring beam along the external walls of the mosque, and the trusses had to be high enough to raise the toldo above the level of the small domes around the courtyard. As a result, these high-tech structures are visible from outside the mosque, in fascinating contrast to the traditional architecture.

"King Fahd expansion project launched in 1985. The land designated for the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque, even when cleared, was far from ideal and, before building could commence, it was necessary to pile-drive some 8,500 steel-encased stakes to a depth of between 100 and 160 feet[30–50 m] into the ground down to the bedrock in order to ensure the extensions would be able to withstand any eventuality and would be strong enough to support an additional floor if, at a later date, such a further development is deemed necessary. By the middle of 1990, the main building had been finished and, by April 1994 the entire project had been completed." via kingfahdbinabdulaziz.com __________________

Prophet’s Mosque expansion work goes apace
SWIFT WORK: Thousands of workers toil day and night to complete the project for the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque on time.
Tuesday 16 December 2014
In a race against time, over 6,000 individuals, from engineers to construction workers, are pooling their efforts to complete the expansion of the Prophet's Mosque. That huge work force is supervised by the committee of expropriation, which is part of the project initiated by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to expand the mosque and develop the surrounding areas.
The team is preparing the infrastructure in the eastern and western sides of the mosque and have already removed more than 100 properties in the central area, including the Ansar market, Awqaf building and the old children's hospital, while work is under way to remove the King Abdulaziz Library and a number of major hotels.
The total space of expropriated property is estimated at 12.5 hectares, with compensations reaching a total value of SR25 billion.
The company implementing the project is preparing the eastern side to take more than 1.8 million worshipers, which is the biggest in the history of the Prophet's Mosque. Among the many renovations, are the addition of a new building beside the mosque that surrounds it and connects with it from the north, east and west. Other expansion plans include the establishment of a lower floor to house air conditioning and other equipment.
The project is now in its fourth phase, after the supervising committee finalized assigning properties for the expansion.

I've been following this development for a while now and I don't understand what's going on. On the al-Baqi side there seems to be some sort of foundation work that's been going on for a while, but it seems quite small in comparison to the renders. Also the renders imply that a LOT of newly built hotels will have to be demolished for the new expansion.
Can someone shed more light on this please?

More work is to be done on area just cleared and major work is due in Northern-central area which is right now too crowded with hotels and authorities have plan to at least clear the very first row of hotels after 1 Rajab 1436 H. and they've already sent notices in this regard. Baqi side had the most newly built hotels and is now serving as storage space along with some site offices. __________________

Project of the Century
Prophet's Mosque expansion
Friday, 09 January 2015
2014 witnessed the beginning of the largest ever expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. More than 5,000 workers, including engineers and technicians, are working on the project round the clock.
Sheikh Abdul Wahid Al-Hetab, director of public relations at the Prophet’s Mosque, said about 90 percent of the expansion work in the eastern courtyard has been completed (I think it means ''demolition work'') and now the work is moving toward the northeasterly direction.
King Abdullah laid the corner stone for the project during his visit to the holy city on Sept. 24, 2012. Later in March 2013, the King approved the masterplan for the mosque’s expansion, after experts made necessary changes to the plan on his instructions.
The King ordered the expansion of the mosque’s northern, eastern and western parts within a period of two years. Once the expansion is completed, the mosque will have a total area of 1.1 million square meters with a capacity to accommodate 1.6 million worshippers.
The first phase of the expansion will cover the construction of multistory buildings within the periphery of the existing northern courtyard and the flat roof of the entire mosque structure. There will be a main gate for the new building with two main minarets and two side minarets at the corners of the building. The first phase will add prayer space for 800,000 worshippers.
In the second and third phases, the eastern and western courtyards will be added to the mosque, thus increasing the capacity to accommodate another 800,000 worshippers. The mosque will have 27 new domes.
A total of 200,000 pilgrims will benefit from 250 sunshades erected in the courtyards of the mosque. Each sunshade, made of fireproof Teflon, covers an area of 576 square meters and is operated remotely.
The expansion project includes a helipad for airlifting patients to hospitals and new roads separated from pedestrian pathways, in addition to a tunnel for pedestrian traffic with escalators. According to sources, the expansion project also covers massive development of the central Haram area and the unplanned neighborhoods, with the holy mosque as the core center.
The expansion will feature the rich Islamic heritage of the Prophet’s city and the Islamic architectural designs of the mosque. The surrounding buildings will also be developed on the same pattern.

…the Mubarak earth sends ripples down the spine…love surging through the veins…and powerful urges of yearning in the heart to be with all the blessed residents…look! can’t you see the gardens of the gardens of Paradise?…surrender the obscured within yourself…allow the emotions to feel the closeness of our Blessed Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam…and drift to that Day of Rising when he SallAllahu alaihi wasallam will appear from so near with his dearest of companions RadhiAllahu anhum…all gathering with Ahlul Bayt, thousands of illustrious companions, scholars, Awliya…
Citation :
“The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) was sitting by a grave as it was being dug in Madinah [in al-Baqi’], when a man looked inside the grave and remarked, ‘What a wretched final resting place for a believer!’ So the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) replied, ‘What a wretched thing you’ve said [because a believer’s grave is a garden from the gardens of Paradise]!’ So the man said, ‘I didn’t mean that [about the grave itself]… I only meant a death in the way of God [far away from home, is better].’ So the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ‘There is nothing like dying in the way of God, but there is not, on the face of this earth, a piece of land more beloved to me that my grave should be in, than this [Madinah].’ [He repeated that] three times.” [Malik, al-Muwatta]

The work on the expansion of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah has been stepped up on the instructions of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah so that they are completed on schedule, said Finance Minister Ibrahim Al-Assaf after inspecting progress in both cities.
“These expansion projects are being carried out in the service of Islam and Muslims from all over the world,” the minister said on Wednesday.
The SR80 billion Makkah project will increase the mosque’s capacity to 2.5 million worshippers while the Madinah mosque expansion will accommodate more than 1.5 million.
In Makkah, Al-Assaf inspected the public transport stations on Ajyad Street behind King Abdul Aziz Endowment Tower, a new hospital project, security buildings, the pedestrian tunnel, the mosque expansion, and the final stage of construction on the mataf, or the circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba.
“I came to Makkah on the instructions of King Abdullah to inspect progress on the Haram expansion toward the north and the mataf expansion project,” the minister said. “Those implementing these giant projects are doing their job efficiently to complete them on time,” he said.
Prophet’s Mosque expansion
Al-Assaf said the first phase of the Prophet’s Mosque expansion is being implemented on its eastern side with the support of 7,000 engineers and workers. This is the largest in the city’s history.
The Finance Ministry has identified 10,000 properties surrounding the mosque that has to make way for the project. The ministry has already paid compensation to 2,500 property owners. Al-Assaf said the remaining beneficiaries would receive their compensation soon, adding that a specialized committee was working on it.
King Abdullah laid the foundation stone for the expansion project in September 2012. The project, which includes the construction of a new building northeast of the present mosque, is being carried out according to international standards. The annex building covering 82,000 square meters will provide additional prayer space for 167,000 worshippers.
“This will bring the total area of the mosque to 98,500 square meters while the mosque’s terrace, covering 67,000 square meters will accommodate 90,000 worshippers. The project also includes an underground floor to accommodate air conditioning and cooling systems and other services,” he said.

Prophet’s Mosque expansion
Thursday 15 January 2015
